This is to Elizabeth J. from Walla Walla. We were lovers once, when you were 21 and I was nearly 40. Everyone else called you Lisa; I preferred your full given name. On the extremely remote chance that you will see this, I’m writing to say, all these years later, that I have never forgotten you. We were only together for a short time, but what a time it was. I remember every moment: From the crazy night we met at that bar in Lower Queen Anne; to those phenomenal days and nights in my downtown apartment; that wonderful weekend on Camano Island; and especially the trip we made to your home town. I thought about that trip recently, about making love to you in a mountain pasture along the way, and later, especially–oh, yes–in the wheat field outside of town, on a blanket under a blazing sun. Indeed, I’ve thought about all the ways we made love and how much we learned from each other. So I just decided to write this as a small tribute to you. Elizabeth, you weren’t my first, but you were the best lover I have ever known. Toward the end of us, I was an idiot, and it was right that you broke it off. I was devastated; in fact, I went into therapy for quite awhile. But over time I came to realize that what we had was quite special. Thank you for what we had. Thank you for you. Wherever you may be now, I hope you are happy and that you look back on us with the same fondness I feel. D
