I spent my teenage summers in upstate New York at a program called the Center for Talented Youth- basically nerd camp. I did 7 hours of math a day with other nerds who had scored as high on the SATs in middle school as most people do in high school. This is where I met my first great love, Jack. He was really cute, and I had a crush on him ever since he told me he was in the circus and taught me how to juggle at the juggling activity one afternoon. He was shorter than I was then, 5’2″ probably, but still one of the cutest guys in the whole camp; blond, green eyes, high cheeck bones… We had our first kiss at one of the dances to “Nightswimming” and we kept in touch all through the next year. He even came up to Boston to see a Beck concert with me and my best friend. The next summer, back at camp, things got hot and heavy and we talked about possibly having sex, and then decided we were going to do it (I’m pretty sure our entire group of friends knew about this). At 3am I was going to sneak over to his room, which was luckily located down the hall (his was the only guys hall to be adjacent to a girls hall) and we were going to refer to the steps of foreplay he had found in some magazine. Somehow when I moved into my room, I found condoms in the drawer of my desk- so we were going to use one of these- also convenient since I had no idea how we would’ve gotten them otherwise. Anyway, the night came, it was July 27th 2000. We were both 15 and virgins and super nervous and excited. It was dark and neither of us had any idea what we were doing. I was too dry to really make things get going, and he clearly got the worst blue balls of his life, so he asked me to leave. I left but wasn’t actually that humiliated, I was exhilirated. I liked this guy so much. We found some privacy later that weekend and did the deed successfully, and we did it probably a handful of times before the end of that session. All our friends were intrigued since most if not all of them were virgins, and it was always a hot topic of conversation. I enjoyed this more than I probably should have. Anyway, it’s still fun to say I lost my virginity at math camp.
