Abstract
Islam hadhari is new approach from Malaysian government to promote Islamic way of living. It does also give a new life to the Muslims by branding Islam by its own ways. This paper will discuss mainly about the challenge of landscape architect on how to implement Islam hadhari in their professional practice.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Definition

1.1.1 Islam hadhari
According to Abdullah Badawi on islamonline homepage (retrieved, March 31 2009), Islam Hadhari, or civilizational and comprehensive Islam, is not an inclusive concept as it also emphasizes the importance of progress—with an Islamic perspective—in the economic, social, and political fields. Islam Hadhari emphasizes the need for balanced development, which covers both physical and spiritual development. Hence, Abdullah Badawi proposes a holistic development approach for Malaysia. This means a shift in development approach from a “secular paradigm” to a “tawheed paradigm,” which emphasizes developing a thinking society, social harmony, and economic progress.
1.1.2 Landscape architecture
Landscape architecture is the most modern of the environment professions and represents a synthesis of arts, science and technical philosophies and practices that seek to care for the Earth’s landscapes in a truly holistic, creative and sustainable manner. It involves the investigation and designed response to the landscape. The scope of the profession includes master planning, site planning, environmental restoration, town or urban planning, urban design, parks and recreation planning; green infrastructure planning and provision, all at varying scales of design, planning and management. A practitioner in the field of landscape architecture is called a landscape architect. (Wikipedia, retrieved on 5 March 5, 2009)

2.0 Protection of the environment

2.1 Islamic point view
There is now a worldwide agreement that we are faced with a profound global environmental crisis caused by mankind. Across the planet we are experiencing climate change, soil erosion, loss of soil fertility, pollution, drought, flooding, deforestation, coastal erosion and many symptoms of a sick planet, and this is reflected in our own country. Millions of people across the world are dying or finding their existence threatened as a direct result of this crisis. The Holy Qur’an has predicted this crisis, clearly identifying mankind’s responsibility:

“Corruption has appeared on land and sea as an outcome of what men’s hands have wrought: and so He will let them taste the evil of some of their doings, so that they might return to the right path.” (Qur’an 30:41)

These calamities or ‘corruptions’ can have their causes traced to mankind’s greed and lack of stewardship in his use of the resources given to us by God. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) declared, “The world is beautiful and verdant, and verily Allah (SWT), be He exalted, has made you His stewards in it, and He sees how you acquit yourselves.” (Sahih Muslim). But we have left the “right path” in our greed to accumulate material wealth, our thoughtless materialism and consumerism. We are ignoring the principles of good stewardship, instead by focusing on the benefits of the present we have little regard for the destruction we are causing, the poisonous emissions we spread, and the wider impact of our actions to the environment.

2.2 Landscape architecture point of view
Landscape architect is the profession that involves with the environment and built discipline directly. It can be put that landscape architect is like a ‘middle man’ between development and the environment. Therefore, protection of the environment is a key and a crucial part of the profession itself (Simonds, 1961). Landscape architects has been train to be the stewards of the land. Therefore, the conservation of the environment has to become their top priority in designing any project that directly involve natural environment. They have ego considered every living things in their design so that any build environment design and development would give a minimal effect t towards natural environment thus protecting it from unnecessary harm that can be caused by human.

2.3 Islam hadhari approach
Islam hadhari approach in protecting the environment is to enhance the relationship between men and environment (islamhadhari homepage, retrieved March 31, 2009). Natural environment is not a man’s belonging, but it is belong to god. Therefore, we should treat our natural environment in a more manners way. Any development that wants to be made should been planned fully and been thought carefully by men especially the landscape architect and professional in the built environment discipline. Islam hadhari approach put conservation of the natural environment as its most crucial part in the development that involves alteration of the natural environment (islamhadhari homepage, retrieved March 31, 2009).
According to islamhadhari homepage (retrieved March 31, 2009) to achieve all this we must bear in mind certain important factors;
I. Human as the steward of the land (caliph)
II. Conservation of the natural environment that effective and the usage of the natural resources for good purposes.
III. Better natural resource management.
IV. Preserve the natural beauty.
V. Preserve the water bodies and air quality.
VI. Protection of the flora and fauna.

3.0 Challenge of the landscape architecture profession towards Islam Hadhari.

3.1 Profession that promote sustainable development.
Landscape architects play their role in the sustainable development by implementing their knowledge of the land in their landscape design and landscape construction (Simonds, 1961). Landscape architects has been train to be the stewards of the land. Therefore, the environment has to become their top priority in designing any project that directly involve natural environment. Consideration towards every living thing in their design is a must, so that any build environment design and development would give a minimal effect t towards natural environment. Landscape architect should take lead and action to promote sustainable development to the other profession.

3.2 Role in conservation and preservation.
Land and the natural environment is something that is most precious to us in this world. Its weight more than anything else in this world. Islam hadhari teach us on what should we do to sustain it. Conservation and preservation is a must if we want the younger generation to live in a world that is safe from all sort of pollution. As an old African proverb describe ‘we don’t owe this world, but we simply borrowed it from our child’. Water bodies are one of the most vital things that we have to preserved and manage properly. Water is life and without it, it’s nearly impossible for living things to survive, unless it’s a miracle, we don’t argue with miracle.

4.0 Solution and recommendation.
4.1 Promote Islam hadhari to the built environment profession.
Islam hadhari concept is kind of new to people today’s. Lots of professional take lightly any solution that ‘smells’ religion. In a basis that Islam hadhari is not a new school of thought in the Muslims world, it’s should be considered just a branding to catch attention of the people so that they don’t think religion is something obsolete in any professional approach. From time to time people start thinking that religion should not interfere in the professional profession. Then it is vital to take people back to the religion by give a new image that suitable for nowadays fashion. One should always remember that any make up to the religion should not contradict with the very foundation of Islam itself.
4.2 Early approach on Islam hadhari to the young professional.
For young professional, this concept should been told and ‘put it in their head’ in the training level before they could go outside to become the professional. Malay proverb says ‘melentur buluh biarlah dari rebungnya’ means that whatever thought that we want to teach to people, it is always the best to teach it when they still young and fresh. Foundation of Islam hadhari can be thought at school. Meanwhile they will go into detail at their respectful faculty.
4.3 Use Islamic approach in design solution.
Islam provides solution for all of our problems. We have a power to choose what kind of solution that we want to use in our decision. As a Muslims, Islamic approach is always the best for us to follow. Islam promotes us about sustainable development long ago before man can fly.
“And do not corrupt in the earth after being tilled, and invoke Him in fear and longing. Surely the mercy of Allah (SWT) is near to the fair-doers.” (Qur’an 7:56)
“And when he turns away, he [diligently] endeavors about the earth corrupt in it and cause the tillage and stock to perish; and Allah (SWT) does not love corruption” (Qur’an 2:205)
It has been long since Islam tells us about sustainable development and protection of the environment. Why not now we used Islamic approach to create solution of our environmental problem?
