I am writing this on behalf of my cousin who I will call Angela. She is watching me type this and I am doing it in the hope that she will realise that none of this is her fault, she has no reason to be ashamed and she should not suffer any more for someone elses violent act.
I have chosen this site because someone involved in this story (JK) apparently reads this site and I hope he reads this. In time I hope Angela will have the courage to name and shame you.
Angela’s family were (and still are) very strict and so she never had a boyfriend, she had never even been kissed by a boy. She could only visit school friends houses and always had to be back early. She sometimes was allowed to stay at my house for a sleep-over.
Angela is 17 now. But on the weekend after her 15th birthday, she came to stay at my house. I am a year older and my parents are not so strict. I would often go to a local nightclub at weekends and I go on dates with boys.
That night we got made up. Angela borrowed a dress from me. She is a pretty girl and she looked beautiful. We got in a taxi and went to the nightclub.
Sometime during the evening, we were chatting to four boys. I went to dance with one of them and the other three stayed talking to Angela. The boys were just flirting and Angela was having fun being out and feeling like the centre of attention.
There was a VIP area upstairs at the nighclub where local sports teams and local TV personalities sometimes go. One of the boys said he knew how to get in by going up the fire escape stairs. Angela came and told me and I said I would come along a little later. How I wish I had told her to wait.
This was naiive in the extreme. But I have to say that the boys we were with seemed to be really nice guys. There was no bad atmosphere, it was just great fun.
Angela went outside the club and down the side of it and then round the back. It was a very dark but she thought they were just going to the fire escape stairs and they were all fooling around making ghost noises.
The three boys then turned violent. They tried to kiss her and were groping her. She screamed and shouted for them to stop. She was shouting for help, but no one came. They were swearing at her and calling her a slut and a whore. Between them they ripped her dress down and her underwear off. They forced her to the ground and held her there while she was raped seven times.
I found her bleeding and bruised when I went round there to catch up with them. I wrapped her in my coat and took her home. She would not go to the police or the hospital and she was completely incosolable, crying, being sick and shivvering in shock.
Over the weeks that followed, it became apparent that in this one incident, Angela was made pregnant and later we discovered was given an STD. She was too scared to tell her parents. Angela did not know what to do and could not talk about it. I tried to think what I would do and I helped to arrange for an abortion. This is one of the many things that Angela still cries about.
Over two years later Angela usually cries when she leaves the house. She cannot look her parents in the eye without feeling shame for lying to them about going out. She cannot talk to boys at school. Angela breaks into tears for no reason at all. When she does sleep, she has nightmares. I know that her family worry that she might be mentally ill, but they have not told her directly. I think she needs professional help to get her life back together, but she knows she will have to talk through the whole thing again if she does seek help and she does not feel strong enough to do that.
The horrible truth is that none of this is her doing. She is a beautiful young girl who was attacked by some evil cowards and has to deal with the consequences of that every day of her life.
