One of the reasons that young people ignore adults is that so many adults give advice on subjects without having the fact straight in their heads.
AIDS is a disease that is transmitted from one infected person to another. If there are two people in close contact and neither one of them has the disease, then neither one will contract the disease from the other.
Amber and Greg apparently had no other sexual partners so they won’t give each other an infection obtained from another sexual partner. There is no indication that either one abuses injectable drugs and shares the needle. There is no indication that either one is a hemophiliac. Hemophiliacs are generally well aware of their AIDS risk.
While the reader of Amber’s story does not know all these details, Amber and Greg do. Is it any wonder that they might tune out an adult that raises the AIDS boogyman in vain?
The pity is that the concern for pregnancy is a real one and that will be dismissed right along with the AIDS scare. That is why scaring young people into responsible behavior fails to acheive objectives.
I have concerns that engaging in sexual activity sets up a person for bad habits that will be carried forward into later relationships where STDs other than AIDS become a significant concern. I also have concerns that Amber did not obtain proper consent from Greg who was inclined to exercise some responsibility. Amber could have given him more support than she did if she truely loves him.
I hope both of them make some resolutions for their own future well-being. Adult pleasures call for adult behavior. In the meantime I congratulate Amber in the joy of her first torrid love affair.
