I was hitch-hiking to the appalachian trail head in Roanoke Va – it was 1974 – early summer (school was just out) and I was headed for a couple weeks backpacking.
It had been raining for the past 20 hours or so – I was a bit wet – long wet hair hanging down the middle of my back -a real site! Anyhow – this 1973 Coupe DeVille pulls over to the side of the road – I tossed my backpack into the back seat, said “hi” to the driver without really thinking and hopped in.
Driving down the road, the driver (Anne – with an ‘e’) started talking, turned out she was 42 years old, she had a bottle of southern comfort under the seat that she was swigging from as she drove – and offered me some southern comfort – but no liquor. She took me to her place to dry off and wait out the rain – said she felt “sorry” for me being out there all alone and cold.
Well I wasn’t alone and cold for long – ’bout 10 minutes later she comes out of her bedroom in a long robe, nothing underneath and untied – so I got a very full view. She asked me if I liked her, and brother I said yes – I’d made out with a couple girlfriends, and even gotten blown once – but she didn’t complete the job (we were interrupted) –
Anne did me right – taught me well – and even dropped me off at the trail-head – two days later . . I often wonder how many other young guys she helped out over the course of her life . . lets see . . she’d be what – 68 years old by now?
